Kwak Hoon
Introduction
곽훈의 작업은 회화와 설치, 행위가 교차하는 다층적 실천을 통해 물질과 정신, 보이는 세계와 보이지 않는 세계의 경계를 탐구해왔다. 그의 화면과 오브제는 동양적 사유와 샤머니즘적 감각을 바탕으로 파괴와 재생, 응집과 해체의 긴장을 드러내며, 회화를 하나의 제의적 공간으로 확장한다. 작가에게 조형 행위는 이미지 생산이 아니라 원초적 에너지와 시간의 흐름에 접근하는 과정이며, 물질의 표면은 흔적·진동·울림이 교차하는 장소로 전환된다. 이때 상징과 추상, 의식과 무의식의 경계는 느슨해지며, 관람자는 작품 앞에서 시각적 판단을 넘어 존재의 근원적 감각을 마주하게 된다. 곽훈의 예술은 결국 ‘보이는 것 너머의 실재’를 탐색하는 수행적 경험을 제안하며, 현대 회화가 가질 수 있는 영성적·사유적 차원을 새롭게 열어 보인다.
Kwak Hoon’s practice spans painting, installation, and performative gesture, exploring the threshold between the material and the immaterial, the visible and the spiritual. His works draw on Eastern philosophy and shamanistic sensibilities, revealing tensions of destruction and renewal, consolidation and dissolution, and transforming the pictorial surface into a ritualized field of energetic exchange. For Kwak, making is not the production of imagery but an encounter with primordial forces—time, vibration, trace—which turn matter into a site of resonance rather than representation. In this process, the boundaries between symbol and abstraction, consciousness and instinct, become fluid, inviting viewers to engage with the work not through interpretation but through an immediate, existential awareness. His art ultimately opens a contemplative dimension within contemporary painting, proposing a space in which the unseen, the energetic, and the essential come perceptibly to the surface.
