Youn Woo Chaa
Introduction
최연우는 아마존의 투카노·바니와 공동체와 함께 생활하며 체득한 전통 위빙 기술을 바탕으로, 자연 재료의 물성과 반복적 노동의 시간을 동시대적 조형 언어로 전환하는 작업을 이어왔다. 그는 아루마 줄기를 직접 채취하고 시뽀(cipo)로 마감하는 전 과정을 수행하며 원주민 문화에 뿌리내린 직조의 구조와 감각을 깊이 이해했고, 이를 통해 공예와 예술, 서구와 토착의 경계를 넘나드는 독자적 형식을 구축한다. 복잡한 형식과 비문양적 정보를 직조 체계로 번역하는 그의 방법론은 패턴과 구조, 리듬의 조형적 가능성을 확장하며, 서로 다른 문화적 가치가 위계 없이 공존할 수 있는 새로운 미학적 지평을 제안한다.
Youn Woo Chaa’s practice is grounded in the weaving traditions he absorbed while living with the Tukano and Baniwa communities of the Amazon, where he learned to harvest aruma reeds, prepare materials, and complete works using the cipo binding. By internalizing the structural logic and sensorial intelligence embedded in indigenous craft, he transforms the materiality of natural fibers and the temporal rhythm of repetitive labor into a contemporary visual language that traverses boundaries between art and craft, the Western and the indigenous. His method of translating complex, non-patterned information into woven structure opens new possibilities for pattern, rhythm, and form, proposing an aesthetic field in which disparate cultural values coexist without hierarchy.
